Title:
Illustrating Change: A Self Portrait of the Disposable Tourist's Landscape Through an Exploration of Environmental Empathy
Abstract:
This visual and written collection is an accessible creative work observing the environmental impact of human wastefulness and ecotourism through an interdisciplinary rather than strictly scientific lens. In this project, I've traveled to several different nationally recognized parks and lands in the West in order to observe the way that people's wastefulness and apathy for the Earth negatively impact the environment in a variety of often underrated ways. In order to gain a greater perspective of this topic, I have gathered field information through observing and experiencing the landscape and how people interact with it for myself. This interaction between humans and the environment is represented in four oil paintings coupled with a variety of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry pieces. These representative pieces demonstrate the environmental ramifications of our wasteful western society. These pieces are meant to all work together in a collaborative and interactive way appealing to a spectrum of voices and audiences. This project calls for a culture of change and compassion moving forward in a rapidly changing world, and is intended to inspire individuals to reach towards empathy rather than apathy in regards to their actions in relationship with the environment.
