Title:
Leukemia Instances in Individuals with Down Syndrome: A Comparative Emphasis
Abstract:
There is an extensive documented history of increased rates of leukemia in children with Down syndrome between infancy to adolescence. This may be attributed to a number of lifestyle factors unique to children with Down syndrome. These risk factors include trisomy 21 itself, preventative treatments for medical risks creating drug toxicity in children with Down syndrome, and adverse side effects of leukemia treatments. This literature-based study explores trisomy 21 and its implications in the human condition, both medical and social. We also delve into the composition of leukemia and its progression; through this we explore current leukemia treatments and evaluate their effectiveness in relation to their cost. This grants us the ability to present an objective, in-depth view of childhood leukemia through our interdisciplinary understandings of biology, chemistry, anthropology, and economics. Biology is our primary tool to explain the technicalities of both conditions aforementioned and how they interact with one another. Chemistry explores leukemia treatment options and associated reservations. Economics performs a hardline cost-benefit analysis of current treatment methods to provide a view of what is most fiscally feasible for assisting these individuals. Finally, anthropology explores the culture surrounding both cancer and Down syndrome and how it can be mitigated and rehumanized; this approach draws attention to the inherent stigma around cancer and genetic abnormalities.
