Title:
Beginnings with Oils
Abstract:
These paintings show my first attempts at working with oil paints. The first is a rendition of Paul Cézanne's "Flask, Glass, and Jug". My goal was to get a better understanding of how to work with a new medium and find my own style while also accurately replicating the composition of Cezanne. The second painting is a still life done with painting knives. I chose this composition because of the nice contrast between the different elements and because I wanted to challenge myself to paint the reflective qualities of glass using the painting knife technique. My goal was to capture life and movement in a still composition using the texture that is created with painting knives. The third painting that I have titled "Shadows and Elves" is a personal project that I took on to extend my portraiture skills to oil paints. I wanted the chance to use oils on the subject that I enjoy painting most - the human face - so I could see if the medium suits me going forward. I found that oils allow me to capture a broader range of color and detail than watercolor or graphite and I will most likely favor them over other mediums in the future. The final painting is a work in progress depicting a still life composition that I assembled. The goal of this project was to capture historical and cultural themes of Cinco de Mayo. These projects have helped me develop my painting skills and style range overall.
